ENSC 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Toxicant, Risk Management, Ibuprofen
Document Summary
Study of ways poisons interact with biological systems. Toxicant-substance that causes a harmful effect when administered to a living organism. Toxin- a toxicant produced by a living organism. **all toxins are toxicants, but not all toxicants are toxins** Drinking too much wine and having a hangover. All the way from not feeling well to death. Chemical spill, quickly cleaned up, high concentration and exposure v. s. slow leak of a chemical. Dose (vs. concentration: refer to dose when it"s a known amount given to an organism, concentration is in a liquid. What is the organism or system that is affected by exposure to the chemical. More or less receptible to adverse effects from chemicals in comparison to other species. Hazard- innate ability of a chemical to produce toxicity in a receptor (harm, adverse response) Exposure- pathway for substance to be exposed to the receptor. Bioavailability (amount of chemical that gets into the organism, linked to exposure)
