ENGL 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), Tybalt, Analytical Psychology
Document Summary
Act i, scene i: the swordfight between mercutio and tybalt, constance comes on stage right before this happen and breaks up the two. Romeo does not get exiled and can therefore continue his relationship with juliet. Constance assumes agency right away as she attacks romeo- she is very comfortable with interfering with the plot, something that she was quite insecure about originally (page 50). She is deliberately taking a more active role, acquiring agency and is more eager to interrupt the sequence of the play, not doing it as hesitantly. She is mistaken for a man and takes the first opportunity to go along with this, earning some respect that she may have not gotten otherwise. She notes that identifying as a man helped her to gain authority. In act i, she would have stammered and corrected them saying that she is (cid:858)just(cid:859) a (cid:449)o(cid:373)a(cid:374).
