Leonard cohen: born in the affluent westmount area of montreal, studied at mcgill university where he was influenced by the montreal group. He began as a poet, but also published two novels before turning his attention to music. Much of cohe(cid:374)"s (cid:449)ork e(cid:454)plores his je(cid:449)ish faith, (cid:271)ut he also (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e a(cid:374) ordained zen buddhist monk later in life, frequently retreating to a monastery in california to meditate (lecker, ed. 338-40). (cid:862) uzanne(cid:863): she is not a passive character that is put on a pedestal and admired from afar (i long to love her, but i cannot touch her). Suzanne takes you down and she controls- she has a sense of agency. Cohen uses the second person point of view, probably the rarest form of narration- (cid:894)(cid:862) uza(cid:374)(cid:374)e takes. This poem was inspired by a real romance that cohen had with a woman named suzanne.
