Document Summary

Problem plays : explore social issues of contemporary concern (women"s place in society in a doll"s. Of course, these plays examine questions of identity, psychology and social repression, just as drama always does, but it does so by using realistic characters and settings. Maxim gorky: also russian, socialist realism: exploring social strata and subjects that were formally considered unworthy of representation or too controversial, or even offensive. Konstantin stanislavski: method acting - actors identify with their characters by looking for personal experiences they share with the characters, or imagining how the characters would act in situations not depicted in the play. Naturalism: emile zola, naturalism and the stage (1880). Human behaviour stems not from deep psychological drives or eternal character types. Instead, heredity and circumstance constrain behaviour: characters are forced into roles they were destined by birth to play, and limited by the constraints their societies place on them.
