COMM 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Greenhouse Gas, Kyoto Protocol, Environmental Stewardship
Document Summary
During the industrial revolution, societal behaviour shifted from self-sustenance to a consumption- inspired marketplace. With the increase in demand and supply the concepts of specialization and outsourcing were born. This shift also brought on the dramatic intensification of destructive pressures on our environment. Degradation: is the deterioration of the environmental through the depletion of resources and the destruction of ecosystems. Kyoto protocol: is the 1997 (effective 2005) international agreement that binds participating nations into stabilizing and reducing greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions, by at least 40% below 1990 levels. Challenges going forward & building a reduced-carbon economy. Top 6 toxic threats: lead, mercury, chromium, arsenic, pesticides, and radionuclides. Many of these listed are one time expense cleanups luckily. The world is continuously using up their natural resources. Energy requirements are expected to rise from 495 btu to 622 between now and 2020.
