Earliest and simplest of spanning space is the pier and lintel system, two support piers with a lintel on top. Stonehenge is built this way, greek temples are build this way. Problem with this is that the space between piers has to be small, otherwise lintel on top will crack in the center where not supported. Stonehenge: big piers and small lintels on top. Type that is embraced by romans (borrow it from other civilization), and run with it and becomes distinctive of architecture. True arch has two support piers on either side but overtop there is an arch, if put series of curved stones overtop in arch shape, one put. Keystone in at end, whole thing locks together because pieces are wider on the top then on the bottom.
