O family is important in roman society as even the dead ancestors are portrayed in public festivals, funeral procession resulting a recently dead person; these previously dead ancestors are shown as well. Painting, sculptures, etc: polybius (greek historian) Greek discussing roman respect for ancestors from an outsider. Taking about wax masks (didn"t survive years unlike the stone ones we have left) and put on actors in the processions. Named because its characteristic room is the atrium, located off the hallway leading in from street and in center of it there is a pool for collecting rainwater (impluvium). Inwardly focused, emphasis is not on street or activities going on outside, don"t want to be looking out at street nor want people on street looking into them, so need light: windows are small and high up.
