Takes over spain, greece, and north africa. Takes control of parts of asia minor. Greatest expanse = completely encircling the mediterranean sea: mare nostrum. Periods in roman history: regal period ruled by kings, republican period governed by elected citizens, imperial period ruled by emperors. Geography: next to the tyrrhenian sea and the tiber river, close to other civilizations. Disadvantages: creates flooded, swampy areas when the tiber overflows, very wet, lots of creeks. People lived in the hills to get out of the wet flatlands by the river. Palatine hill: had a commanding view over the. Sediment from the river made the land very fertile.
