Rome is found in central Italyit has a wide coastal region and an important river that passes
through it (Tiber River).
Rome has a temperate climate.
The thracians had a language that was not used much anymore (they used a Greek language) but
they wanted to identify themselves as Roman citizens so they started to use Latin.
First settlements in Rome were around the Capitoline Hill and Palatine Hill because they were
the first places for defence.
Rome is located in an area from which a lot of roots go to important areas.
Salt is very important in ancient worlds because it is used to preserve food. Salt was also given
as an allowance to soldiers.

There was a dispute about whether to name the city after Romulus (Roma) or after Remus
(Remora). They were deciding who would be the king.
Romulus was proclaimed the king of Rome.
The most accepted date for the birth of Rome is April 21st 753 (KNOW THE DATE)
Romulus built walls around the Palatine in order to defend the territory.
Remus acted as an enemy and broke down the walls and so Romulus killed him. (check)
Romulus started to invite people who didn’t have places to live to stay in a part of Rome called
Azeume (check)
The city was originally only populated with men. They needed women in order to have
successors. In order to get women, Romulus decided to go to Sabine and abduct the women there
and to take them back to Rome so they could become wives of the men there.
Sabine custom in modern time:
- The women were reluctant to go into the homes of the men in Rome so the men had to
carry them into the homes. This is the tradition of men carrying their wives into the
threshold of their new homes.
The Greek background:
- Greek = Herakles
- Latin = Hercules
- Worshipped at the Great Altar (Ara Maxima) in Rome
