Document Summary

Epic cycle = poems that treated the events of the trojan war, from its origins to the return of the heroes to their homelands. Prequels and sequels and side stories about what happened in the iliad and the odyssey. War lasted 10 years, but iliad was only 40 days. They filled in the gap and what happens to all the heroes. These poems were different than those of homer: almost completely lost, cited by other authors. Strong emphasis on fantastic things: heroes, monsters, strange events. Anios" daughters: can food out of nothing, fed the people. Lynkeus: eyes of a lynx, can see minds, can see through things. Hesiod: wrote about genealogy of gods, but also monsters. Monster called echidna = half beautiful girl and half snake. Poems of homer and hesiod"s theogony: mostly based on people like us, who feel the same human emotions, values, limitations.
