Magistracies with imperium: consuls, praetors, dictators. Magistracies without imperium: quaestors, tribunes of the plebs, aediles, censors. Only patricians were in consuls up to 367 bce. 172 bce for the first time there were two plebeian consuls. Elected by the comitia centuriata (centruriate assembly: these assemblies were made based on age and wealth. The individuals who wanted to pursue a political career realized it was necessary to put a minimum age on being part of the consul: minimum age to be consul was 42. In order to become a consul the magistrate should have experience in other offices, specifically as a quaestor or praetor.
