BIOL 350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 33: World Happiness Report, Consumerism, Ecosystem Services
Document Summary
Is it really in our human nature to live cooperatively in peaceful societies, and within the carrying capacity of the earth, while protecting ecosystem service: probably, but it will need help. It will need help: can we expect cultural evolution then to rescue us from the failings and intrinsic constraints of our own human nature, yes! But need careful negotiating and goals, and biosocial management goals = recognizing sociocultural economic paradigms must be redefined. It amounts to making room on our "radar" for both: we"re in charge to our culture, our genes only whisper to us. World happiness report: harnessing happiness data (how much humans think their lives have meaning and they have found happiness) is central to addressing the need for sustainable development in future civilizations. Legacy drive: to buy stuff to boost self-esteem, reputation, social status. Leisure drive: to buy stuff for fun, diverting a worried mind.
