BIOL 335 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Algal Bloom, Eutrophication, Trophic State Index
Document Summary
Considered to be the most important element in lakes. Nutrients: any element that an organism must take into live, grow and reproduce. Phosphorus is used in many aspects of like: dna, rna, and atp synthesis. Growth is limited to lowest concentration: only as strong as the weakest link , element present in the lowest concentration relative to its demand limits growth. Most significant form of phosphorus is po4. Particulate: material found on the filter when doing filtrations. Dissolved: material found in the filtrate when doing filtrations. Particulate phosphorus: ~ (>95%: fraction that would be found in a filter, when water is filtered, this is the majority of phosphorus found in lakes, phosphorus in organisms, mineral phosphorus. Soluble phosphorus: ~ (<3%) colloidal phosphorus: soluble high molecular weight compounds, algae want to use this type. Xp: ~ (<1%: soluble low molecular weight organic phosphorus compounds. Small amounts of phosphorus have large effect on lakes. Oxygen levels still present in deep water (graph)
