Biol 111 - ecology and the environment - lecture 5: ecosystems. The environment- everything that affects a living organism. Biophysical environment can also be thought of as: biotic and abiotic surrounding of an organism. Focus on trying to understand interactions among organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems and the biosphere. Eukaryotic cells have membrane bound organelles and a distinct nucleus (plant & animal) Cell is the basic unit of life in organisms. Classified into series of hierarchical categories: kingdoms, phylum, class, order, families, genus, species. Species groups of organisms that resemble one another in appearance, behaviour, chemistry and genetic make up. Taxonomists use a system of nomenclature to decide how to name an organism. Requires each species be identified with a two-part latin name: genus followed by a specific epithet. Population a group of interacting individuals of the same species occupying an area.
