BIOL 102 Lecture 17: Gene Concept
Document Summary
Man had tumour in his lung that did not have his dna; had a tape worm that had a tumour; tumour escaped tapeworm"s body and attached to lung of man. Thought traits were due to concept of blending or inheritance of units. Discovered alleles; how they receive paternal and maternal alleles. If allele differ, dominant allele determine organism"s appearance. Studied peas due to easy observation in number of characters (pea size and ower colour), controlled mating, ability to obtain large # of progeny from given cross, and short generation time (easy to go through experiment) Monohybrid: one gene that has a dominant and recessive feature; ex. Each pair of alleles segregate independently in gamete formation; applies only to genes on different chromosomes for far apart on same chromosome; genes located near each other on the same chromosome tend to be inherited together. Dihybrid crosses: two character that are genetically crossed.
