Document Summary

Lecture 13 - intro to genetics; molecular basis of inheritance. Nucleoside = nitrogenous base + sugar (deoxyribose) Nucleotide = nitrogenous base + sugar (deoxyribose) + phosphate group. One end of dna strand starts with phosphate group, other ends with sugar group; polarity of strand; 5" to 3"; 5" is phosphate end and 3" is sugar end. Region with bunch of a&t is diff shape than c&g; got bumps and grooves and twist; difference in 3-d shape; tells speci c proteins whether to bind and where to bind. As strand separates (denaturing or melting), open parts become accessible to enzymes that replicate the ssdna to make usually identical structures of dna. Semiconservative replication; half of the dna strand is new while other half is part of parent dna. Looking at individual cell basis, you can"t predict what will be the parent dna and what will be new.
