Document Summary

Change in energy is constant; calculated by determining equilibrium point of different reactions. Tendency to change to a more stable state. Spontaneous: perform work only when moving towards equilibrium. Metabolism: rate, reaction, which reactions; energy processing. Will not go back to higher energy state unless energy is put into it; ex. if someone jumps off a pier, it will take more energy to bring him back up on the pier. Use of exergonic process to drive an endergonic one. Electrochemical gradient; moving something against its gradient. Not high energy bonds; just high energy molecule. Atp itself has more energy than other molecules. Using atp for energy; lipids and carbohydrates store energy. As something is going towards equilibrium, it can be used to do work. If nothing is put into the system to keep it going towards equilibrium, then it will just stop at equilibrium and will not longer provide work; useless to the cell.
