31 views3 pages

Document Summary

Somatic (voluntary -> conscious control over skeletal muscles) Signals stem from the anterior horn of gray matter within sc, and targets skeletal muscle. Visceral motor (smooth, cardiac, glands) -> involuntary control. Stems from the lateral horn of grey sc matter. Preganglionic neurons with cell bodies in cns. Postganglionic neurons with cell bodies in ganglia outside cns. Recall: ganglion is a collection of nerve cell bodies outside the cns. Most organs receive both sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation. Origin: spinal cord segment t1-l2 (thoracolumbar division) Widely distributed to many parts of the body. Generally is responsible for situations in which energy needs to be expended (fight or flight) The postganglionic neurotransmitter is noradrenaline or norepinephrine (same thing) Origin: brainstem and spinal cord 2, 3, 4, craniosacral division. More limited in distribution to target organs. Preganglionic neurons from the lateral horn leave the spinal cord via ventral root. Lateral horn -> ventral root -> white ramus -> paravertebral ganglion * always.
