ANAT 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Bony Labyrinth, Tympanic Cavity, Semicircular Canals
Document Summary
Anatomy 215 (reading material: chapter 18: pages 479-490) Structure of the ear: external ear (hearing): auricle (pinna) external auditory canal tympanic membrane ceruminous glands. Aka tympanic cavity middle ear (hearing): tympanic cavity. Air filled, mucosa lined cavity in temporal bone. Medial border is wall of bone; 2 openings: oval window (superior) and round window (inferior) pharyngotympanic tube (eustachian) Standing downward and obliquely connects tympanic cavity to upper part of throat (nasal pharynx) **mucosa lining tympanic cavity is same as mucosa that lines here and mucosa that lines upper part of throat. Function: equalizes pressure in middle ear to atmospheric pressure pressure must be the same on either side of tympanic membrane in order for it to freely move. Middle ear infection common result of sore throat. Infection of throat can spread through mucosa to middle ear. Blockage of tube could cause buildup, dr may have to put ear tubes into membrane that will drain pus from middle ear cavity.
