BIOL 422 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Grey Partridge, Transect
Document Summary
A high profile count with problems: the us census. The census is not accurate, it is biased low. The bias also differs by group (african americans, hispanic and indigenous) There has been a proposal lately to fix the census problems. Do a normal count, plus a normal follow-up of non-respondents. Pick a subset of population (housing units) and count everyone present on a given day. This is known as a lincoln-petersen mark-recapture statistic. You must assume that you cannot count every single individual. Part of population may be more under-counted than other parts (i. e. one sex or age-class is less detectable than others) Must consider the extrapolation from the surveyed area(s) to the total area. First round you must capture and mark individuals. If animals are already marked (naturally, like a tiger"s stripes or a shark"s scars), then you do not need to mark them initially.
