Visc lecture 8 class 7 notes the renaissance. The thirteenth century was a period of political division and economic expansion for the italian peninsula (stokstad 281) increase in trade. How they are working, functioning, and living in the city: shows city from shifting viewpoints. Siena and florence important italian centers of italian gothic painting: duccio di buoninsegna (1278 1318) (well known gothic painter of the time) Huge alter piece commissioned by siena cathedral (maesta alterpiece), the center of attention installed in the main alter slightly more medieval. Goes against the singular surface of the renaissance, more of in the range of architecture: like a painting in the round painted on both sides. No sense of receding perspective (like art from the medieval ages), rocks are also more developed than the people: inscription includes the artist"s signature, cimabue (other known gothic painter of the time) For the church of the holy trinity in florence.
