Document Summary

1517: luther, with his 95 theses at the door of a church in wittenberg, in saxony, attacked the principles of the catholic church. He was interested in shifting authority away from the catholic church towards the personal. Two things were critical for luther: the authority of scriptures as the word of god on earth it is what is written that trumps what the church or priest might tell you about the meaning of that scripture. Second, it is one"s personal response to scripture that produces an authoritative understanding of the divine. These two ideas constitute the core of luther"s attack on the catholic church. They challenged the supremacy of the pope, and of the catholic church as an institution these things aren"t needed as an intermediary. The issue of indulgences was a major issue for luther. This shift provided part of the foundation for the new anthropocentric understanding of the universe.
