energy efficient buildings 2. Improvement to the public transit system.
2. Increase minimum wage, needs to be a living wage
3. We need to increase the availability and accessibility of child care
4. Increase measures to promote anti-racist initiatives
90% of Canadians want the federal gov to take a much more active role in changing
poverty
1 Karl marx, looking at class conflict (1818-1883)
*-reserve army of labour *
during the industrial revolution
creation/development of steam power, created a factory based economy
- Social life was falling apart, not enough jobs in the factory.
- Rural, made only by hand and now people are living in the city and stuff isn’t made by
hand but mass produced in a factory
Capitalism brought with it a 2 class system
-people who owned the factories where rich and those who worked poor
if you want to make a lot of money you pay your workers less and the conditions poor
there are 4 different classes (Marx)
1. Bourgeoisie, -elite capitalist class, owns the means of productions
2. Petite bourgeoisie- middle class (Marx thought this group would crush under capitalism
3. Proletariat, the workers the ones who would sell their labour for wage.
4. Lumpenproletariat, people on the fringe of society and do not work for wage labour, do
odd jobs for cash, scavengers for food, may engage in some criminal acts to survive
Exploitative relationship between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat would only get
worse according to Marx
The bourgeoisie said the proletariat that you are poor and suffering because you aren’t working
hard enough
They have become victim to false consciousness
Eventually proletariat would start to see the exploitative relationship they start to develop class
consciousness they are now in a position to do something rise up and lead a worker’s revolution
and over throw capitalism and replace it with socialism
