PSYC 3533 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Radical Mastectomy, Fibroadenoma, Cervical Cancer
Document Summary
Most frequently diagnosed form of cancer in canadian women next to non-melanoma skin cancer: estimated 1 in 9 will develop breast cancer in lifetime, higher risk if mother, sister or grandmother had it. Causes: 5-10% genetic, have identified two genes brca1/brca2, have identified 10 new cancer subtypes based on genes. Long-term use of hrt therapy = risk factor: much higher risk if smoke + hrt. Obesity and unhealthy lifestyle = risk factor. Should be done at least monthly by all women. Get to know the look and feel of your normal breast and report any changes or lumps. Generally, there are three types of lumps in breasts: cyst fluid filled sac, fibroadenoma lumps of fibrous and glandular tissue, malignant tumour. Usually need to biopsy the lump: needle aspiration first of it goes down = cyst and no further action required, all other lumps are typically removed for biopsy. If malignancy is detected, other action is needed.
