PSYC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Casual Sex, Gender Role, Personality Development
Document Summary
Bigger differences between people in gender than within gender. Women are more accurate at assessing emotion in other people. Levels of aggression (physical aggression) is higher among men. Differences may be due to the way society thinks men and women should be. Social role theory: theory that gender differences occur because girls and boys develop different behaviours and skills based largely on differences in gender role expectations. Play behaviour in children help teach gender roles and expectations. Family and social relationships may also contribute to the development of personality differences between genders. Interactions between families and friends help to teach gender roles. Broad cultural practices, often a reflection of religious and philosophical beliefs is also significant in the development of gender differences: generally, men held a higher position than women, leading women to act smaller. Hypothesis that self-esteem is based upon how well one lives up to gender-dependent schema.
