Asthma- a chronic inflammation disorder of the airway. Cause- immune-mediated airway inflammation created by an allergy or irritant. Allergen- a substance that can produce a hypersensitive reaction in the body but not necessarily intrinsically harmful. Regulating the humidity of the air, preferably <50% Dry clothes in the dryer, particularly bed linens. Different classes of medications for asthma: beta-2 adrenergic agonists, glucocorticoids, cromolyn, methylxanthines, ipratropium, leukotriene modifiers. Therapeutic effects are enhanced (drugs delivered directly to site of action) Only 10%% of drug reaches lungs (use spacers) Much can be lost in oropharynx, swallowed, etc. Used to deliver drugs in the form of a dry, micronized powder directly to the lugns. Delivers more drug to the lung= 20%, less to the oropharynx. Small machine used to convert a drug solution into a mist. Used via face mask or mouthpiece held between teeth. Takes minutes longer to administer same dose. Ventolin (albuterol)- blue: ordered: 2 puffs q4-6hrs prn.
