It forms the bulk of the thickness of the skin. Composed of strong, flexible connective tissue which supports the epidermis and anchors the accessory structures of the integument. Also contains blood, nerve, and lymph tissue: functions: nourish epithelia, sensation, temperature regulation, fluid retention hydration. Composed of: areolar connective tissue which forms microscopic nipple- like mounds that jut upward into the epidermis (called dermis papillae) Increase surface contact between dermis and epidermis and help prevent separation or slipping. Composed of: dense irregular connective tissue with lots of collagen and elastin fibers.
