Margaret laurence: july 18th, 1926 in neepawa, manitoba. 1935 her father dies and she is raised by her aunt margaret and maternal grandfather john. Simpson: john simpson appears as timothy connor in a bird in the house. Manawaka is the setting for a bird in the house and other stories: based off her hometown. 1962 begins writing a bird in the house. Some minor characters in the novel are central characters in other stories. Stories are anti-climatic and inconclusive: deliberate action of the author. Novel about a coming of age: told in a narrative voice, 1st person point of view, childs point of view from adults. Some common themes: narrative voice, memory, history, identity, survival, freedom. Important to consider depiction of women in a bird in the house when reading. Starts with vanessa macleod and her dad"s young metis patient piquette tonnerre: suffering from tuberculosis. Father invites piquette to spend the summer with the family at the cottage.
