PSYC 2245 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Fundamental Attribution Error, Empiricism, Materialism
Document Summary
Psyc 2245 - lecture 1 - introduction to social psychology. Social psychology: scientific study of the way in which people"s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people. Naive realism: we think we see things as they really are, and other reasonable people will agree with us, we see people who disagree with us as biased, while we see ourselves as being objective. Study of social psychology is done empirically: logic/insight leads to an educated guess (hypothesis), which leads to experiments looking to prove or disprove these hypotheses. Fundamental attribution error: overestimate personality and inner contributions, and underestimate societal influences. Situationalism: idea that any phenomena can be predicted by looking at the person, and the situation that the person is in. Diathesis stress: people are predisposed to an underlying tendency which can emerge due to the occurrence of a situation or stressor.
