Two already discussed flaws of ambrosio"s evident here: Selfishness: what he want outweighs interests of other people. Craves challenge: an aspect of his pride via wanting to win her. He is intelligent enough to figure out ways to do this, despite never having tried it before. Has little success because of antonia is either too innocent to take the hint or too virtuous to accept his arguments. But he uses pseudo-intellectualism (a common demonn trait to keep her impressed and hide flaws in his views. Side note: lewis on the bible (re: scene where ambrosio tries to get antonia alone) The characterization of the bible on p. 54-55 is one of lewis" most controversial passages. In order to tell people what is right, the bible gives examples of wrong behaviour which it condemns. The problem: an innocent person can read and this be intrigued by the wrongdoing, missing the lesson.
