In most works that this class looks at, both literal and figurative aspects of haunting are present: Literally - a character is haunted by something natural. Figuratively - a character is unable to overcome his/her issue . Fantasy has nothing to do with real life - you might want to reconsider that view in light the parallels many of these works display . Key distinguishing feature is inability to move forward: Present in both works to be considered today. Accompanied by other features behaviour, emotions, etc, that demonstrate dysfunctional response to life"s adversity. Narrator is reading/ thinking/ dozing - ie. trying to avoid his present reality. She"s struggling with himself re: cant stop thinking about her. Narrator seems on edge , over sensitive to environment; wants something to distract. Midnight and winter - darkness and cold, far from dawn/ spring which are associated with from his current predicament hope.
