Document Summary

Infectious diseases: the invasion of the human body by microorganisms that produce harmful/lethal consequences. Host: any organism that is capable of supporting the nutritional and physical growth of another organism. Infection: the presence and multiplication within a host of another living organism, with subsequent injury to the host. Colonization: the act of establishing a presence in the host (which is part of the infection process- but may not cause infection). Normal microflora: microorganisms that inhabit the human (internal and external) that does not result in harm to the host: commensalism: an interaction between host and normal microflora. Even though the microflora require shelter and nutrition, the host is not negatively affected: mutualism: the interaction where both microo and host derive benefits from the interaction. Many factors affect the severity of infection: health of the host, virulence (disease- producing potential) Pathogens: are so virulent that they are rarely found in the absence of disease.
