SOCWORK 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Subsidized Housing, Bed Bug, Aggressive Panhandling
Document Summary
Probably what we think of when we think of homelessness. Sleeping rough, emergency shelters, squatting in abandoned buildings, discharging from institutional care (hospitals/child welfare systems/jail) situations with no where to go. Paying more than 30-50% of income on housing, being in core need lacking in affordability or suitability (do you have enough bedrooms to contain the ppl living there) **cold alert: people choose not to stay in shelters even when it"s cold because sometimes it still seems like the best option. Shelters allow us to understand the scope of the issues locally, although not all homeless people stay in shelters. A lot of the people who don"t access services don"t want to be known for being homeless, they"ll hide from the system. Therefore we don"t have a great way to count. It"s easier to count youth homelessness because they access services (upwards of 90%)
