SOCSCI 2CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Mainspring
Document Summary
Sense of purpose, inner confidence, involvement, meaningful constructive relationships, success at school and success at work. What appears uncertain is how we facilitate these goals for children. Researchers note that a fully functioning child is different from a person who flounders through life. The difference is in their attitude towards themselves, their degree of self esteem. Researchers tell us high self-esteem is not noisy concede, it"s a quiet sense of self- respect and self-worth. They tell us you do not waste time and energy impressing others, you already have value and you know it. Self-esteem is so important, is described by researchers as the mainspring that slates every child for success or failure as a human being. Two basic needs for a strong self-respect: The child needs to be able to say to themselves, i am lovable. This means they are valuable simply because they exist. The child needs to be able to say to themselves, i am worthwhile.
