Lecture 4: self, identity and socialization role of. Assume age-related progression in children"s ability to interpret racial and ethnicity information". Do not account of children"s creation and recreation: when using observation and reports it is not accounting for their interpretation and decision making process. Sees children as ego-centric: children are self-interested, do not account for feelings of others and do as they are told. Scholars like vygotsky are more cognizant of interpretive, social nature of child development however still not fully understanding how children create and assign meaning for racial and ethnic concepts. Key interest: role that structure or social positions have on the types of personality and sense of self one develops. Three components: self-esteem/self-worth: how do we feel about ourselves, mastery: are you con dent in your abilities and our situation, mattering: how do other people feel about us and what are our connections to other people.
