Inaccurate observations: own individual experiences can lead to inaccurate observations, mistakes in remembering things, ex. Eyewitnesses for crimes, very unreliable: we construct memories different from anyone else, we can suppress memories, easily swayed in constructing memories (certain specific wording in a question can lead to remembering things different) In science you try to find results that contradict hypothesis to test how strong it is. Independent: a variable with values that are not problematical in an analysis, but are taken as a given. Some dialects of social research: four broad and interrelated distinctions underlie the variety of research approaches, dialectics refers to the tension between the following contrasts, idiographic and nomothetic explanation. Idiographic explanation: one tries to discover all of the possible reasons for the event, trying to explain an event. Idiographic explanation: interviews with unemployed about their experiences dealing with the stigma of their circumstances: nomothetic explanation: how does unemployment influence health, inductive and deductive theory.
