SOCPSY 1Z03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Floyd Henry Allport, Ingroups And Outgroups, Penrod
Document Summary
Conformity is a type of social in uence involving a change in belief or behaviour in order to t in with a group. Ratings were more extreme when participants were alone. Less extreme in the presence of others (moderation effect) Conclusion: people adjust responses in the presence of others (to t in) How we form norms around ambiguous assessments (no real right answer) A stationary, small point of light in a dark environment appears to move due to involuntary eye movement. Test 1: isolated participants asked to estimate movement of light. Test 2: test repeated in groups of three. Initially ( rst dot) large variation across individuals. Estimates eventually converged on group average (different groups nd own respective average) Test 3: repeated test 1 (in isolation) Did not return to original estimate from test 1. Conclusion: tendency to conform is higher when task is uncertain. Group is de ning a good estimate, and members are conforming to it.
