Portraying identities in the language and the media. This chapter shows the systematic deconstruction of our language and media representation of groups with different social identities, such as race/ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality. We will explore how language and media construct our social reality. Disability recognition of minority; access to certain space; unity/solidarity. Praying spirituality, religion, accommodation (speci ed rooms); unity/solidarity. A key element of a discourse or an ideology. Discourse: discussion of a topic agenda; portrays a reality; social/political meaning. Language: word choice, sentence structure, tone of voice (written and spoken) Ideology: part of discourse a brief. Gendered, ethnocentric and sexual language need to be deconstructed. Analyzing how language is used (language and symbols) Assuming homogeneity in each group (associating with stereotypes) The inherent connotation of white and black . Trying to create false consciousness through discourse. These are derogatory terms and words that create and enforce social inequalities. Language use is inherently a political matter (not bias free)
