SOCIOL 2D06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Social Distance, Class Discrimination, Social Forces
Document Summary
Attitudes are positive or negative evaluations" of people, places, things, behaviours and ideas. Interested in how social forces affect individuals" attitudes and how the attitudes in turn relate to behaviour. For example, walking into a room and creating an understanding of your instructor and fellow classmates. Si: constructed nature of attitudes: attitudes are created based on meanings, construction and/or de nitional processes that are rooted in interaction with other social actors. In other words: there has to be an interaction occurring where meaning is exchanged, created, negotiated and rede ned that is leading to the development of particular attitudes amongst individuals or community. Some argue that it is dif cult to measure and capture the relationship between attitudes and behaviours. Have quantitative and statistical methods to take away the intrusive aspect, but the relationship is not always strong and clear-cut.
