Not simply an unmediated expression of a biological instinct. Dependant on culture that we live in. Construction of taxonomies of sexual deviance by psychiatrists in the late 19th c. Differentiation & classi cation of normal & abnormal sexual desires. How sexuality became an important constituting aspect of the self & self-id. Shift away from an understanding of sexuality as sinful & criminal behaviour, to a permanent state of being. Are diverse vary across time and place. Are far from natural, inevitable and given. Attitudes/beliefs are nudity, virginity, delity, love, marriage and appropriate sexual behaviour. Are only meaningful within context of one"s own culture. Many scholars agree that there is no form of sexual activity that has not been regarded as deviant at some time. Including what we call heterosexual sexual activity. Certain sexual practices even amongst heterosexuals are illegal among certain states. Recorded nature and incidence of # of sex-related practices. Public nudity was not shameful (ex. running to baths)
