Research is conducted in both biomedical and social science disciplines. For the most part all researchers are pursuing the same outcome: attempt to create knowledge through a process of discovery. We learned about functionalism, conflict theory, feminism and symbolic interaction. Each perspective provides the lens by which sociologist might look at our social world because each perspective looks at the world from a different angle and scope. A sociologist; theoretical orientation will influence the type if research question. Conflict theorist: general topics about families (macro) Functionalist: interested in the smooth functioning of society (macro) Symbolic interaction: face to face encounters and meaning people use to facilitate social life (micro) Feminism: examine issues pertaining to gender and inequality (micro or macro) The theoretical perspective you take will only allow you to pose research questions that makes sense within that theoretical paradigm same is true for the method you pick to use to answer your research question.
