It is historically inaccurate that social stratification has always existed. For elderly singles, the incidence of low income has improved since 1980-2004. Inequality is structured and is impacted by social policy. Ehrenreich: book nicked and dimed: she wrote a fake resume, and worked minimum wage jobs. i. e. waitress, house cleaner, nursing home, wal-mart. It was a test to see if she could pay rent and eat, working full time hours and earning minimum wage. She was white, no kids, wasn"t on welfare, healthy, etc. She could not pay rent and eat at the same time. The higher your social class, the healthier you are, emotionally and physically. The poor have shorter life expectancies, at greater risk for chronic illnesses, infectious diseases, newborns are at greater risk of dying within their first year, have low birth weight. Poor women are less likely to receive prenatal care. Poor people are more stressed, and more likely to smoke, drink and do drugs.
