Lecture 15: class cancelled no lecture given. Readings: sources (pp 264-270) + ls ch 25. Correcting and refocusing past (focus on belief at expense of practices: not doing a 360 as if practices exists separate from belief. Implication of being on bodhisattva path: going to become a buddha, hanging out in samsara working on the 6 perfections, ready to do anything for anybody, there are those living this ideal. In japan - a point where one does not even have to ask: tension in japan over how effective one"s own practice is. Week 10: conceptual shift in thinking - pure land is right here and all around us, practices focus on breaking through conceptual barriers, so one can understand that they are already enlightened. Japanese temporarily displaced (and geographically: concerned with time period of dharma, buddha allowing women to become nuns the dharma declines faster, chinese developed schemes in understanding where they were in the time period of the dharma.
