Document Summary

A relational approach to autonomy in health care sherwin. I am, finally, told that i have the right to fashion my own moral life and shape my own moral goals. My autonomy, i have discovered, is an inarticulate bore, good as bodyguard against moral bullies, but useless and vapid as a friendly, wise, and insightful companion. Daniel callahan 1984 autonomy: a moral good, not a moral obsession. Critique of the ideal moral autonomous agent: looking at it in terms of not being community minded and ignores other aspects of humanity. Traditionally autonomous person is disembodied, outside of society, and uninfluential. A necessary principle in health care ethics yes! Critiques are not suggesting to get rid of the principle but to look at how we conceptualize it. Prevents unjustified paternalism: weak paternalism often justified. Duty to rescue in an emergency situation quibbling about whether the patient in crisis needs to consent is a waste of valuable time.
