RELIGST 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Four Noble Truths, Hindu Philosophy, Noble Eightfold Path
Document Summary
The four noble truths of buddhism: all existence is suffering. Just existing means, one is suffering because people are always worried about something, even worrying that the good will be taken away: the cause of suffering is desire. Desiring new things, and desiring to keep what we have: suffering can only be overcome by eliminating desire, the way to eliminate desire is to practice the noble eightfold path. The noble eightfold path of buddhism: right understanding/view/perspective, right intention, right speech, right conduct/action, right occupation/livelihood, right endeavour/effort, right contemplation/mindfulness, right concentration. This is something buddhism encourages humans to cultivate. Dharma: the teaching (of the buddha) how we come to understand all this. Nirvana: enlightenment: says we"re mistaken in regard to soul and spirit because nothing stays the same, says we"re influx constantly, always changing, concept of no self, learning about one"s own religion. Isr pp 6-7 learning about one"s own religion: preservation (keep the tradition alive)
