Looking at how much effort liars are expending. Lies have high personal relevance: aka you are lying about your own activity, if you are lying about someone else (ex: to protect a spouse) it is harder to detect. When stakes of deception are high: aka where the crime would produce strong consequences. Unaided versions of detected deception are not that good: we have not made much progress at all. Undergrad students just as good / bad as people in the law enforcement system. We see a general bias in the population towards believing people rather than seeing them as liars. No certain cues we can reliably use to tell if someone is lying to us or not. If we can"t detect deception with the naked eye, maybe machines can help us: most common: polygraph test. Polygraph: translated to many writings": machine to record voltages, it is not a lie detector, a machine that can be used for many things.
