We are vessels for our parents" genes. The preferences would have optimized getting genes passed into successful vessels. Optimal reproductive success: wonderful offspring who will also be reproductively successful. Males and females have different preferences when it comes to mating: men are opportunistic and women are choosy. Eggs are energetically costly and sperm are not. The way men and women reproduce have different consequences for them in how success of their reproduction is achieved. They grow the offspring and then breastfeed it. Women"s initial investment is much higher than men"s, who can release their sperm with little worry. From an evolutionary perspective, all sex is about reproduction. Women are choosy with their sex partners because they want to produce a high quality gene vessel. (low sex drive helps women not make mistakes in their choices. ) Men are opportunistic every mating is a potential vessel for his genes that he doesn"t necessarily have to invest in.
