Material world unpleasant; to be transcended: west transcendence mostly after death. Not many opportunities to get beyond ugliness of material world until death: east transcendence possible during life. We can transcendence while were still alive. Philosophy and religion separate in west, intertwined in the east: this makes the eastern traditions more important they focus on who we are and what we can do (philosophy is religion which is psychology) Fate more in our hands in eastern thought. Our ultimate goal is pleasure pleasures: we want to be happy, personally, emotionally. Present pleasures should not be deferred for the sake of future: we should pursue pleasure wherever it is. We should control, not be controlled, by our pleasures: able to control our impulses, and give into them for pleasure. Pleasure includes mental pleasure, love, friendship, moral contentment: curiosity, knowledge, wisdom, exploration, etc, these are all pleasures we should pursue.
