Happen because there is a disruption in the vascular (blood flow) system. Ask person to smile - uneven or lopsided. Ask person to raise both arms - does one drift downward. In age groups 85+, strokes occur more often in women than men. This is due to women have outlived the men that were prone to strokes and mostly healthy males are surviving. Anatomy of the blood supply to the brain blood supply comes from the heart from the common carotid artery. This artery them splits into the external (towards the front face) and internal (towards back of the face) carotid artery. There are also a vertebral arteries located near the spine which come together at the base of the brain as the basilar artery. All of the arteries join, forming a circle - circle of willis. Cerebral fluid surround brain and spinal cord - protects by providing cushion and absorbing shock.
