PSYCH 2NF3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Pia Mater, Median Aperture, Arachnoid Mater
Document Summary
Lecture 8: organization of the nervous system i. Figure out a system to begin mapping a mouse"s brain. Mri taken of brain, brain removed from skull and frozen then sent to lab. Brain stained, images digitalized, then brain furtherer fragmented and repeated. Data collected shared for free to the world (open source) Rostral (front) - caudal (back); dorsal (top/superior) - ventral (bottom/inferior) Anterior (front of face) - posterior (back of face) Ipsilateral, proximal = close to another, on the same side. Sensory pathways = afferent (moves away from brain) Fast reflexes usually processed at level of spinal cord for faster response (responses always motor) e. g. touching hot stove. Autonomic nervous system: sympathetic (fight or flight - action potential faster) and parasympathetic (rest and digest - slower action potentials) division. Next arachnoid membrane then pia mater - more delicate. Produced in ventricles daily - only small amount contained in brain, most drained into body system.
